Nitrate Removal
I have experienced marine aquarium keeping for over 9 years. In that time trial and error has given me the knowledge on many factors in marine fish/coral keeping. The one problem that everyone faces is nitrates. I will not get into how nitrates are formed but I will tell you how to remove nitrates from my experience. The one major thing you need to make sure of is not to make "nitrate" factories. Nitrate factories are places in your aquarium that acclimate food and waste. Sponges, carbon, sand beds are the 3 major places nitrate factories form. Cleaning all your sponges and replacing your carbon will keep your nitrates down to where there supposed to be. Keeping your sand bed clean also helps. The best form of removal is plants. Plants will do better than all those chemicals out there. In fact all those chemicals really do not do a good job of removal. Your plants are the natural and more efficient way of removing nitrates and the only thing to use. You’re wasting your money by buying those chemicals or pouches that claim they remove nitrates. They do to some extent but not what you’re really trying to do and it's not natural. There are 2 major plants that do an excellent job of removing nitrates. Sea lettuce & Chaeto. The perfect setup would be to setup a fuge (what most people call them) this is just a tank with a 4 to 6 inch sand bed and some rocks. Then add your plants and prune your plants when they get high. Pruning your plants is in turn removing your nitrates and that should happen every 2 weeks. By the end of the second month, your nitrates should be around 5 when you started out with 100.
